- bradleyjg 11y agoGiven that the battle has been lost, why should we continue to subsidize the hollowed out shells and the armies of deanlets and deanlings swarming over them?
- superuser2 11y agoThe battle has been lost only in political discourse, not really reality. Small liberal arts colleges and places like UChicago and the Ivy League continue to uphold those values; most state schools still have liberal education programs - even if their enrollment and funding is declining. Why should we continue to subsidize them? Same reason we subsidize art, or space exploration. Because it's human progress, and it shouldn't only be available to the rich. What are you expecting the vast and growing population of economically unnecessary people to do all day? In an economy that doesn't need people to work at production anymore, we can move up Maslow's hierarchy to something more interesting, like what the wealthy in academia have been doing all along.
