Try the developer edition of Firefox. I had the same problems with stable Firefox on OS X, it felt slow and unresponsive most of the time, and would regularly choke on js-heavy pages. Dev-edition feels much more performant to me, plus it gets new features sooner than stable.

Was dev edition, or reinstalling Firefox (blanking your profile, adding, history etc) the improvement I wonder?

  I did try blanking stable Firefox too, and still noticed a large improvement. I didn't do a detailed analysis of what was going on, so YMMV.
