Water is needed to transport the nutrients and support cell growth and structure, but most water input into traditional farming just ends up as run off. Much of the actual substance of a plant is pulled from the air. If you can optimize the water usage, and provide the nutrients, the rest of the inputs into plant growth are quite minimal.
