I had the privilege of meeting the Director of Technology of github the other week in Newcastle and he kept getting asked a similar question and his response every time was to use tried and tested tools, languages and frameworks. Not the latest flashy things. From my experience use the things that have been around for a while and have a good community / documentation around them.
