For anyone interested in this, I would recommend checking out The Water Knife (fiction) and Cadillac Desert (non-fiction).

And I suggest reading Cadillac Desert without first looking at the publishing date. It's shocking that we have been so lackadaisical about water consumption for so long.

-- spoilers -- The Water Knife is interesting to the extent that it creates a new sort of dystopian world, but then it doesn't do anything with it. I wanted to see characters evolve, the balance of power shift, or a meaningful escape. Instead it was just competing actors chasing a shiny object, a silly miscommunication, and then everything goes back to normal.
