Wow. I haven't seen this much creepy, leering male-entitlement since I stopped reading Maxim in the late 90s. The whole thing is just gross, through and through. "Betrayed"? Seriously?
If a woman doesn't want her naked body exposed on camera, that's her right, just as it's mine to make the same decision. There's no story here, just basic human courtesy and respect.
- acqq 11y agoEspecially as nobody seems to feel "betrayed" by all the non-nudity either non-CGI or CGI effects which also result in scenes that were never filmed as such.
- StavrosK 11y agoI feel extremely betrayed by all the non-authentic "hacker-talk" in today's movies. I prefer authenticity there. I don't care if actresses use CGI nudes or not, but I can't pretend I don't at least understand people who do.
- acqq 11y ago> I feel extremely betrayed by all the non-authentic "hacker-talk" in today's movies. Just like the hacker-talk, the movies falsely represent other situations, occupations and often plainly lie, have a specific agenda or are simply incompetent in what they present. It's a good thing that you are aware of one small part of it, maybe you'll start researching about all the subtle influences that the movies deliver.
- scrollaway 11y agoI trust you've been enjoying Mr. Robot, then? :)
- tragic 11y agoIt doesn't really bother me that much. But I was watching the Terror in Resonance anime series, and was surprised by how happy plausible references to Tor and a character running an honest to god wget made me. It is also just brilliant in general.

- protomyth 11y agoIts basically like most newspaper articles, if you know the subject you will find fault with the writing. It does seem quite a bit more egregious when they write science or technology, but I get the feeling quite a few farmers, plumbers, electricians, etc. have the same issues.
- nnethercote 11y agoWell said. "Not every movie actress is going to want to do a nude scene. Maybe something’s wrong with her body at the time, or maybe some other actress had a better butt, so they use a body double." As if those are the only two possible reasons for not wanting to do a nude scene. This Jim McBride sounds like quite the a--hole.
- zo1 11y agoThe author put the most important reason there of all, but you conveniently side-skirted that because he didn't follow it up by enumerating all possible other reasons that you like or could envisage. This is the most important reason of all: "Not every movie actress is going to want to do a nude scene." #Edit. Typo.
- leephillips 11y agoI always thought the story about Waterworld was wonderfully absurd: the script called for Jeanne Tripplehorn's naked butt to face the lens, but she (or someone?) insisted on a butt double. She was allowed to pick, from a butt lineup, the butt that she preferred to represent her: http://www.ew.com/article/1995/08/18/jeanne-tripplehorn-says-no-nude-scenes http://www.ew.com/article/1995/08/18/jeanne-tripplehorn-says...
- mediumdeviation 11y agoI think you're reading too much into his words. I don't see it as any different from a trainspotting enthusiasts lamenting the fact that the Harry Potter films used a CGI locomotive instead of a real 19th century steam train. If they believe that something is lost from the use of CGI in the film, that's their prerogative. As with any works of performance art, shouldn't television and cinema come under the same level of critique?
- k__ 11y agoLena Headey is a well known actress. Maybe for some people it was the unique selling point of the episode, that she was nude in it?
- JustSomeNobody 11y agoThat's disgustingly disturbing.
- protomyth 11y agoIt was a scene from the book and she was pregnant at the time. If it makes the actors comfortable so we get a better story, then do whatever you need to do. Everything in film is fake in some way, James Cameron has a great line in the documentary "Side by Side" at the 1:13:45 - "I'm betting you've been on a couple movie sets, when was it ever real? There was kind of a wall there and nothing over there; there was 30 people standing around with a guy with a boom mike, another guy up on a ladder with his a## crack hanging out. There's fake rain. Your street, night, exterior, New York was a day, interior, Burbank. What was ever real?" By the way, Side by Side is an amazing documentary on the evolution and conflict between film and digital cameras.
- k__ 11y ago> If it makes the actors comfortable so we get a better story People have different priorities.

- vacri 11y agoCome on, the two people that talk of betrayal in the article are a webmaster that collects and sells nude scenes from movies and a famous shock jock. Of course they've both got vested interests; it's not like those 'betrayal' comments are react quotes from members of the general public.
- jarcane 11y agoDude, this is how skew works. The writer chose who to quote, who to interview, and what words from that interview to use. Ask yourself why those are the only two voices besides the author that we hear in the piece.

- mcintyre1994 11y agoI don't see how anyone expected her to actually do this scene without something like this, that seems insane. It's not even the nudity, it's the open and massive set, the enormous cast, the hostility and abuse. I'm pretty sure Lena's done nudity before but this was an incredibly well written scene that would be insane to adapt without this.
- tbirdz 11y agoIt's insane for Lena to do the scene, but not insane for her body double to do it? Keep in mind that even though she was CGI imposed with the body double's body, the body double is still a real woman who has to walk and deal with "the open and massive set, the enormous cast, the hostility and abuse."
- flippinburgers 11y agoIs that necessarily the case? Did the article explicitly say that the scenes were exactly the same? It seems to me that they should have had the body double perform the same physical walk with a bit more privacy. Given that they needed the nude body walking the same route I would think that only recording the walk and then editing it over would be the simplest, but I have no experience with video editing so I don't really know.
- mcintyre1994 11y agoWell that's not what I said, so no. If they said to a specific woman - say, someone who had previously done double work for Lena on Game of Thrones that she must do the scene then yes that'd be insane. Given the only credit the actress has in Game of Thrones is that scene [0] I'm inclined to believe that's not the case. I don't necessarily think it's insane that somebody did it, but the expectation of a specific person to would be - whether that's Lena, a regular double or anyone else. Also on a technical note, somebody else already pointed this out and I can only speculate too but I'm not convinced they'd necessarily have to film the exact same scenes twice. I don't know how they filmed it, but their cgi demo reels are really impressive and it could be very different to how it looks. [0] I figured I'd look this up, because yea I'd agree there might be an issue if she was a regular and could have been pressured. Her imdb is http://www.imdb.com/name/nm7098431/ http://www.imdb.com/name/nm7098431/
- Osmium 11y ago> If a woman doesn't want her naked body exposed on camera, that's her right, just as it's mine to make the same decision. There's no story here, just basic human courtesy and respect. Right, absolutely. The linked article almost seems to realise this half-way through, and then charges on anyway. The only issue here, to me, is if the CGI nudity is used in an attempt to "improve" upon reality, and continues Hollywood's distortion of what a normal human body is meant to look like. Especially since Hollywood tends to select for what it considers more attractive people generally (e.g. see its awful obsession with casting younger women in older roles), and now even these people might be subject to CGI modification. To a point, I have no problem with particularly attractive people being cast (regardless of gender), but there's clearly a line somewhere and I'm not sure when that line is being crossed.
- venomsnake 11y ago>If a woman doesn't want her naked body exposed on camera, that's her right, just as it's mine to make the same decision. There's no story here, just basic human courtesy and respect. Of course. But then she should not reap the benefits of stardom and money by pretending it was her naked body on the camera. If you use the fact that "X is naked in Y" in your marketing campaign and X is not really naked in Y then it is dishonest at best.
- altcognito 11y agoIt's a movie. A fantasy. Make believe. I got news for you, most actors don't do their own stunts too.
- venomsnake 11y agoProbably. And claiming credit for other person's injuries is also dishonest. For the record - the only time I was really irked with body doubles was with Arni in T3. This guy was my idol, inspired me to begin lifting and seeing that he was afraid to show himself in the come from the future naked scene was sad.
- prawn 11y agoWho's used that in a marketing campaign? Did Lena pretend it was her own naked body? Reap the benefits - seriously? She's played an excellent character for many years now in this series.
- conradfr 11y agoIf an actress (or actor fwiw) doesn't want her naked body on camera she can also not accept the role.
- mcintyre1994 11y agoProbably worth noting in this case that the book this scene comes from was released after the first episode of the series aired.
