There is a really easy way to evaluate ideas to see whether it would make a good niche startup: does it involve one or more complicated spreadsheets? If the answer is yes, and the spreadsheet is connected to a problem with currency attached, you've got a decent shot at building a better mousetrap, because the mousetrap they're using now sucks. If the answer is no, then its probably not a hard enough problem that people are willing to pay for it, or their current solutions aren't a pain point.
