It varies widely. I've had several polite messages ("How are you? What's your opinion on <xyz>?" etc.) turned down explicity and rudely. Just because they seem nice in a profile doesn't mean they'll be friendly and that they "want to get to know other people". There are a lot of people who are on just looking for hookups. That variety is nice.
