It's getting harder and harder to talk about this with out sounding sensationalist. But that's not because people are sensationalizing it, it's because it really is that bad and that urgent.
We're in decade zero. We act to drastically reduce carbon emissions now -- in the next decade -- or we face the catastrophic consequences.
It's easy to be defeatist and say "Well, the current system is too entrenched, I don't believe it will act, so I'm not going to." And that may be true. But if we all take that attitude, we just lose. End of story.
If we each take the attitude that we can still avert the worst and do everything in our power to reduce carbon pollution where we are, then we keep the door open. Every little bit, no matter how insignificant or small, buys us a little bit more time.
Beyond personal change, you might be surprised at how much power you have to make institutional change. In your startup, in your neighborhood, in your municipality find other people who are aware of the issue, band together and make the case for switching to zero carbon renewables.
Put pressure on your energy company. If they won't listen, pressure the municipality to ditch the energy company and start a muni utility or a cooperative. Put pressure on your startup to pressure their data center providers to use renewable power.
It's not over yet. We can do this.
